Church Health is pleased to present Thrive! – a monthly gathering of survivors of stroke and their families – on Wednesday, Aug.22 at 1 p.m. in the Church Health Community Room, 1350 Concourse, Ave. Through group reflection, social interaction, recreation and movement, we’ll explore how a balanced, healthy life after stroke is within reach. Thrive! is offered by Church Health Physical Rehabilitation and is free to participants and their families. COMMUNITY

(EVERGREEN) Hosted by Micah Greenstein, John Kilzer, Chris Miner, Scott Morris and Kirk Whalum, The Mystic is a monthly gathering to find connection through music, story and dialogue. The Mystic is held the last Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Crosstown Concourse, 1350 Concourse Ave; the next gathering is August 28 in the Church Health Community Room. All are welcome.

Church Health will kick off its inaugural Giving Day on Tuesday, August 28. The campaign aims to celebrate health while also raising funds to sustain the not-for-profit healthcare organization, which provides clinical and wellness services to working uninsured people in Shelby County. NUTRITION

In collaboration with Temple Israel, Church Health will offer a series of Jewish cooking classes starting August 16 at 6 p.m. at the Church Health Nutrition Hub at Crosstown Concourse, 1350 Concourse Ave. This program aims to engage young adults in the art, origins, tradition and technique behind time-honored Jewish recipes and holiday traditions. The August class will celebrate two traditional dishes of Rosh Hashanah—cabbage rolls and apples with honey. Rabbi Micah Greenstein will lead a discussion, followed by a hands-on, mini cooking class with the Church Health Nutrition team. Register online at ChurchHealth.org/event/JewishCookingAug2018/.

In Church Health’s free Community Culinary Medicine Cooking Classes, you’ll learn how to make meals that are nutritious and delicious! Our six-week fall series start Tuesday, Aug. 21 and continue through Sept. 25. Morning (10 am-12 pm) and evening (6-8 pm) series are available. There’s nothing quite as sweet as giving! Church Health Nutrition will host Family Baking Classes on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 9 and 11 AM at the Church Health Nutrition Hub, 1350 Concourse Ave. Families will prepare a dozen oatmeal cookies per participant and take them home to sell to friends and family to help spread awareness for Church Health. All proceeds will benefit Church Health, the healthcare home to more than 70,000 working uninsured people and their families in Shelby County. Registration is $10 per participant. Children must be age 6 and up to participate; childcare for younger children will be provided for $10 per family at The Well. Register online at ChurchHealth.org/Events.

There’s something beautiful about the balance of healthy and delicious food. In celebration of that beauty, Church Health will present The Art of Dinner on Friday, September 7 at 6 p.m. in the Church Health Nutrition Hub, 1350 Concourse Ave. In this interactive cooking class, Chef Joshua House will guide you through a three-course menu including Butternut Squash Bisque, Caramelized Chicken with Mushroom Risotto, and Poached Pears with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. Tickets are $65, with proceeds benefiting nutrition programming at the Church Health Nutrition Hub. Church Health offers Barre Basics each Mondays at 4:30 p.m. starting August 6 in its Creative Movement Studio at Crosstown Concourse, 1350 Concourse Ave. This class for ages 13 and up focuses on exercises at the ballet barre, incorporating dance technique, to increase strength and flexibility. Church Health offers Mixed Level Stott Pilates on Mondays at 5:30 p.m. starting August 6 in its Creative Movement Studio at Crosstown Concourse, 1350 Concourse Ave. These mat-based classes use small and large equipment to enhance students’ experience, and special attention is paid to individual students’ needs in the group setting. Series pricing starts at $63, and prorated series pricing is available. Join professional dancer and choreographer Tamara Parrish for Mindful Body Conditioning in Church Health’s Creative Movement Studio, 1350 Concourse Ave. These workshops are ideal cross-training for athletes and dancers to prevent injuries.
